Writing in Water, Singing the Clouds is an attempt at creating a meditative state where air flows through our bodies, the instruments and the speakers, creating shifting shapes of sonic textures — like thoughts rising and moving away in the mind, or clouds passing on the sky.
Jenny has been making a portative pipe organ as an extension of her own lungs, to interact and play with together with her main instrument — the clarinet. The instrument is a work to-be-made, or “l’oeuvre à faire”, constantly in transformation, made with found (and gifted) materials. These sound sources are sampled and transformed with granular synthesis and digital processing, and combined with recordings from Vålerenga Kirke, creating a textural piece of music reflecting on breath and transformation.
Inspired by Anne Carson’s “Lecture on Skywriting”, the Greek poet Sappho, and the humbling act of doing something for the first time, this commission is an exploration of music making (and consequently: listening) as meditation.
